Have you ever wished that you could go back in time and relive a gig again for the first time, that moment you watched a band play their hearts out, that moment when music his so hard it floods your senses with that feeling of "hell yes " and just know you've just witnessed something huge in the making. So much so when i first saw Rhino tranq live at a small , intimate gig at the Ship inn , Gillingham.
Their sound is unique , something not being churned out by the plethora of new bands trying to make it in an ever growing world of new music. I guess its easy to fall into a trap of sounding like the last song you heard , sounding like the bands that influenced you to become a musician but these four very talented musicians have created their sound by pushing some boundaries , experimenting with style crossovers and producing what is Rhino tranq. That really caught my attention and made me want to know a little more about who they are.
Oscar Payne, Sam Jones , Jack Springett and Lola Costello met at Tonbridge collage almost 2 years ago, all except for Jack having been in previous bands but the chemistry proved to be strong with these four they created the band we today know as Rhino tranq.
This chemistry is very evident on stage. They gel so well , compliment each other as musicians and it shows in their music. When asked about how they all get on and whether they have any obstacles to overcome in their creative proses, " we don't argue about things" was Lola's answer, " we all have our place, we get on and the writing takes care of itself"
Now there's always that burning question ,"where did the name come from?" and there's always an interesting answer. Why would this one be any different. . Left to Oscar to answer this .." I always loved the idea of saying our music is so weird and crazy and hard that it tranquilises rhinos, like when it hits the crowd in the face , a slap wave of sound, its like that could tranquilise a rhino." , and to be fair , that's a pretty good description.
So many times I've asked bands who inspires them, who's music gives them the need to create their sound and all too often its the same old story. How many times do mainstream bands get mentioned , artists listened to by millions and that's the reason they sound like another band just recreating the sound or style churned out by a thousand other bands before them. Thank god this isn't one of them What's even more refreshing is that even myself who has a very broad knowledge of music had to look up artists and albums put to me in response to that question i asked the members of Rhino tranq.
Johnny Marr , Gene Vincent, the Cribbs, the Shaggs , Tayor Hawkins, Jack Stauber and Car seat headrest aren't names I expected from these guys, especially after hearing them play live. But the more i listen to them the more I hear little bits of some of these names creeping in.
As interesting as their previous questions reponse so was the following. I put it to them who they would love to be an opening act for at this stage of their career and once again Dead or Alive, Fleetwood mac, Blondie, Talking heads, the Garden and Johnny Marr were not what I expected. It just goes to show that its the appreciation of music , no matter how long its been around is key in being a successful , progressing musician.
This is one band I've discovered in the last few years I will be keeping a very close eye on. They have gone from strength to strength from their early days, Having played various venues across Kent to headline shows in Brighton and London.
So if youre looking to discover that new slap wave of sound then lok out for these guys, head down to a gig. You might just have found your new favourite band. Now all we need is an EP and the world will be a better place.
